Abstract: The unsaturated zone at the Managed Aquifer Recharge pilot facility in Palamós is being characterized by the evaluation of a conservative tracer experiment. For this, the tracer transport is modelled using the finite element program CODE_BRIGHT (Olivella et al., 1996). A Python framework has been created which is able to write input files for CODE_BRIGHT automatically. Using this framework, in the first part, an automatic calibration of relevant transport parameters has been conducted. In the second part, a Monte Carlo simulation is conducted, introducing heterogenities in transport parameters following a geostatistical approach. Results of the calibration show a poor agreement with properties measured in situ. Results of the Monte Carlo simulation show that the tracer experiment can be fairly reproduced. Future work will further investigate the influence of connectivity in a heterogeneous field on different characteristics present in the tracer experiment. In addition, the same tracer experiment will be modelled using the method of Continuous-Time Random Walk.
