Conference Excursions: Scientific field trip

Join us for a full-day excursion to explore one of the most important coastal aquifers near Barcelona the Llobregat Aquifer. For decades, the deep aquifer of the Llobregat Delta has faced serious salinization due to overextraction and the expansion of the Port of Barcelona. To tackle this issue, a cutting-edge hydraulic barrier was put in place. This system, made up of strategically placed wells that inject treated water, helps maintain groundwater levels and keeps seawater from creeping inland. During this trip, we'll get an up-close look at this impressive infrastructure. Experts from CUADLL (Community of Water Users of the Llobregat Delta) will guide us through how the system works, explaining the water treatment and distribution processes that help protect the aquifer. We'll also visit the Museum of Water, where an interactive exhibit will explore the historical role of groundwater in Barcelona. The visit will also include a stop at a working water reinjection well. To conclude the day, we'll have a wine tasting highlighting Catalonia's winemaking tradition, followed by lunch at the historic Can Serra building. This excursion is the perfect mix of science, culture, and stunning landscapes an experience you won't want to miss!
